Thanks Andrew and Jitendra. It works now! I had tried adding another label to the screen and then also going to Android 2.3.3 as I mentioned and neither worked. So per the issue CR-693907 that Andrew pointed me to I added another Edit Control box (and kept the extra labels) and it works now, and in Android 2.2 still.
